I love the shabby, old appearance of the bed. I want to keep that bed as it is and put a couple of coats of polyurethane on it to seal the old texture on it. Darin thinks we should have it sandblasted and paint it. I plan on accessorizing with white down pillows, white linens, and a colorful antique quilt at the foot of the bed. What do you think? Do you think it should be painted or left as it is?

I would leave it. Coat it to keep the look. That is why you bought it to be an antique.
I vote to keep it authentic. IF, eventually, you decide you it's not what you want you can paint it. If you paint it now you won't be able to go back and you might really end up regretting it.
My vote is to leave it. It goes better with the commode and you can make it pop with the accessories.
